Hello travellers! This is Motoexplora speaking: free spirits, lovers of bends, of tarmac that disappears into the mountains and of wind that smells of freedom. Today we take you to a little-known corner of Catalonia, Spain: Les Crestes de la Llena, a mountain range you will not find in the most overused guidebooks… but which absolutely deserves a stop on your trips on two wheels.
Where are we? Welcome to the most genuine Catalonia
Les Crestes de la Llena are in the province of Lleida, between the comarques of Les Garrigues and the Conca de Barberà, in the heart of rural Catalonia. It is a harsh, rocky, at times wild area. Mass tourism has not arrived here yet, and for that very reason it keeps a rare authenticity.
Back roads, little traffic, breathtaking landscapes and villages that seem frozen in time: a paradise for riders looking for something more than a simple day trip. You come here to ride, to savour the road, to immerse yourself in nature and to meet real people, the kind who still greet you when you ride into the village.
The roads: pure riding pleasure
From a riding point of view, Les Crestes de la Llena offer a perfect mix. Tight bends, constant ups and downs, tarmac in good condition (but with a few rougher stretches: always take care), and views that open up suddenly, leaving you breathless.
One of the stretches we recommend starts from La Pobla de Cérvoles, crosses the mountains to Vilanova de Prades and then pushes on to Prades, a small gem set among the rocks. That is about 40 km of pure poetry for those who love two wheels.
The Crestes themselves are a rocky ridge between 700 and 1,000 metres high, perfect for escaping the heat of the Mediterranean summer. Along the route it is easy to find scenic viewpoints, rest areas and even the odd forgotten hermitage.
Nature, culture and… olive oil!
Besides the riding, Les Crestes de la Llena also offer a great deal to those who want to get off the saddle and enjoy the area. Farming here is still traditional, made of small plots of olive and almond trees and old dry-stone walls. The farming landscape blends with the mountains, creating a unique setting.
A must-see visit is to the olive mills of La Pobla de Cérvoles, where you can taste one of the finest extra-virgin olive oils in Spain. If you love culture and history, do not miss medieval villages such as Ulldemolins or Vilanova de Prades, with their stone lanes and silent squares.
When to go
The best time to visit Les Crestes de la Llena by motorcycle is between March and June, or from September to November. Summer can be hot in the lower areas, but up high the air is always fresh.
In autumn the colours change, the light turns golden and the roads take on a magical hue. Perfect for a photography trip as well as a motorcycle one.
Motoexplora tips
- A full tank: in the more remote areas you will not find many petrol stations. Better not to risk it.
- Respect for the land: these mountains are still untouched. Do not leave litter, respect nature and the locals.
- Overnight stays: choose small farm stays or local B&Bs. Not only will you help the local economy, you will also live genuine experiences.
- Recommended gear: even if the climate is mild, always bring technical clothing suitable for sudden changes in the weather.
In conclusion
Les Crestes de la Llena are not just a destination: they are an experience. Here time slows down, the road calls and every bend tells a story. This is not the Catalonia of the big cities or the crowded beaches. It is the real Catalonia, tough and genuine. The one Motoexplora loves to discover and share with you.
