When people talk about Sicily, the sea, the Greek temples and Etna smoking lazily on the horizon often come to mind. But those who have ridden its roads know that the island is much more. There is an inland Sicily, genuine, made of villages, silences and glimpses that surprise you round a bend. Today we take you to Leonforte, in the heart of the province of Enna, to tell you a story of water and stone: the story of the Granfonte.
A hidden gem among the hills
Riding to Leonforte is an experience in itself. The roads climbing through the hills offer breathtaking views and a sense of freedom only those who travel on two wheels can fully understand. When you reach the town, you immediately feel welcomed by a familiar, genuine atmosphere that is nonetheless rich in history.
In the town centre, almost like a vision, it appears: the Granfonte. A monument you do not expect. More than 24 metres long, with 24 spouts gushing fresh water, this fountain is not just a work of architecture: it is a symbol, a legacy, a story carved in stone.
A piece of history that speaks Flemish
The Granfonte was built in 1652 at the wish of Prince Nicolò Placido Branciforti, the founder of Leonforte. But what makes it special is that it was made by Flemish craftsmen. And you can tell. The style recalls northern fountains, with late Renaissance and Baroque elements blending in a surprising balance.
Think about it: in the heart of Sicily, in a small inland town, there is a water monument designed by architects and craftsmen from northern Europe. Is that not the beauty of our journey? Discovering the unexpected, being amazed by what you were not looking for, but which finds you.
A living place, not just one to admire
The Granfonte is not just something to look at and photograph (although your cameras and action cams will go wild). It is a place to live. The locals visit it every day, going there to fetch water or simply to have a chat.
Sitting there, listening to the sound of the gushing water, watching life go by around you: it is like taking a dive into the past. Every motorcycle traveller knows it – it is not just the kilometres that count, but the moments. And this, believe us, is one of those that stay with you.
Travel tips by Motoexplora

- Food stop: you cannot leave without tasting the late-season Leonforte peach (IGP), perhaps in a home-made tart at one of the local trattorias.
- Recommended itinerary: you can include Leonforte in a tour that also takes in Enna, Castrogiovanni and Lake Pergusa. Few kilometres, but full of emotions.
Why put it in your roadbook
Those who travel with Motoexplora know it: we love authenticity, real places, where history and people are woven into a story that is still alive. The Granfonte is one of those places. A small architectural masterpiece that holds the Sicily we like to tell: hidden, deep, not found in glossy guidebooks but able to get under your skin.
If you are planning your next trip on two wheels in Sicily, give it a thought. Better still, make a stop there. And perhaps, right in front of the Granfonte, you will meet other travellers like you. Because motorcycles take you far, but also close to people. And the Granfonte, believe us, is one of those places where you immediately feel at home.
