The Scottish Highlands: the wild heart of Scotland by motorcycle

The Scottish Highlands: the wild heart of Scotland by motorcycle

There is a place in northern Europe where the road seems to get lost among the mountains, where the sky changes mood every ten minutes and the wind carries stories of clans, battles and peaty whiskies. This is where our adventure begins: in the Scottish Highlands, one of the most fascinating lands to explore by motorcycle.

Those who know Motoexplora know that our trips are not simple journeys: they are experiences, encounters, emotions. And the Highlands offer all this multiplied by ten. If you dream of hairpins wrapped in mist, postcard views and lonely roads where the sound of the engine becomes poetry, then you are in the right place.

Where nature makes the rules

Forget crowded motorways and impatient horns. Here, at every bend you might find a deer, a sheep or simply total emptiness in front of you. But that is exactly the charm of the Highlands. From the first kilometre you understand you are in a place where nature is in charge, and we are only guests.

We start from Inverness, considered the capital of the Highlands. From here, our itinerary takes us west along the North Coast 500, the legendary loop road that hugs the whole northern coast. This is Scotland’s Route 66, but with less traffic and more magic.

The bends along Loch Maree, the cliffs of Applecross, the silences of Durness, the white beaches that look stolen from the Caribbean… every stretch of road is a photograph, a memory to take home.

A land of legends and whisky

Travelling in the Highlands also means coming into contact with a deep, rooted culture. Every ruined castle has a legend. Every pub, even the most remote, has a story to tell over a glass of peaty whisky.

A must-stop is the Glenmorangie distillery or the Talisker distillery on the Isle of Skye, where time seems to have stood still. Here you can taste the true spirit of this land. And believe us, after a day of riding in the Scottish rain, a dram of single malt will seem like a rider’s best friend.

The Isle of Skye: the pearl of the trip

A bridge connects you to the Isle of Skye, and from the very first kilometre you understand it is a special place. The Cuillin Hills dominate the landscape like guardians of an ancient world. The roads climb and fall through lunar landscapes, endless pastures and lighthouses forgotten by time.

Here time stretches out. A stop in Portree, a ride round the Quiraing, perhaps under a leaden sky and a wind that tries to tear your helmet off, and you will feel part of something bigger. Something more real.

Tips for setting off by motorcycle

If you are thinking of heading to the Highlands, here are a few tips, Motoexplora style:

  • Waterproofs always within reach: the weather changes fast.
  • Tyres in excellent condition: the roads can be narrow, wet and full of gravel.
  • Always keep fuel in the tank: there can be 80–100 km between one petrol station and the next.
  • Rooms booked in advance, especially in summer.
  • An open heart: you do not visit the Highlands, you live them.

Why the Highlands? Why by motorcycle?

Because every bend is a story. Because the wind on your visor speaks to you in Gaelic. Because every stop is an encounter. Because on a motorcycle, emotions are amplified. You are not just a tourist, you are part of the landscape.

We at Motoexplora seek out places like these. We explore them, respect them, tell their stories. The Highlands are not just a destination: they are a lesson in travel. A return to the essentials. To freedom. To the road.
